A game feature that allows players to change the appearance of their equipment. This is a popular feature among many players, as it allows them to customize their look in WoW without having to purchase new gear or sell old items. The process is known as Transmogrification, and can be accessed through the Character Tab or the Command Window.
When using the Transmogrification Cataclysm Gold system, a player must have both the item that they want to transmog and the item that will be replaced in order to successfully complete the process. This is to ensure that a match is made, and that any stats from the current item will be retained when the item is changed to its final appearance. Also, the source and target must be of the same type, such as a plate armor piece taking on the appearance of another plate armor piece or a sword taking on the appearance of a shield. It is also important to note that Legendary items can not be transmogrified, in order to maintain the uniqueness of these rare items.
Several pieces of gear can be used to create a transmog set, including items obtained from quest rewards, world drops, badge vendors, or crafting. A player can save a transmog set to one of their characters, and the set will be available for use on that character when selecting the gear that they wish to wear. However, the set will only remain on that particular character, and cannot be viewed by any other players.
In addition to using the Transmogrification system, players can also obtain special sets of gear with matching appearances by participating in certain events. These sets can range from a vanity set designed by Blizzard artists to a mix of gear custom selected to achieve an unusual in-universe or out-of-universe look, and are a great way for players to get a unique style that they might not be able to acquire otherwise.
In the game, players can also obtain additional unique appearances by visiting special NPCs throughout Azeroth. These NPCs will offer to copy the appearance of any equipped item for a small fee. The NPCs will show the player a preview of the potential effects before applying the appearance. Changing the appearance of an item will remove the current appearance and replace it with the selected one, but any changes can be reversed for free by visiting the NPC again. These NPCs will also occasionally offer a temporary service called Trial of Style, which will allow players to obtain unique transmog appearances for free.
